Learn how to create a Windows 11 bootable USB drive using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool or Rufus. Step-by-step setup guide for installation or repair.
If you're planning to install or repair Windows 11, one of the most efficient solutions is to create a Windows 11 bootable USB drive. This guide is part of CroszEduVerse, where I provide practical, no-nonsense tech tutorials for learners, institutions, and professionals across Kenya and beyond.
Whether you're a school IT admin, a DIY tech enthusiast, or a digital service provider setting up PCs for clients this step-by-step tutorial is for you.
A bootable USB drive contains Windows 11 setup files and allows a PC to start (boot) from the USB instead of the hard drive. It’s commonly used to:
Install Windows 11 on a new system
Upgrade from Windows 10
Fix boot issues or corrupted installations
Before starting, ensure you have:
A USB flash drive (minimum 8GB)
A working PC with internet access
Optional: Windows 11 ISO file (if using Rufus)
The easiest way to create a bootable USB for Windows 11.
Download the Tool
Visit Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and download the Media Creation Tool.
Launch the Tool as Administrator
Accept the terms of use.
Choose “Create Installation Media”
Select your language and architecture (64-bit).
Insert and Select Your USB Drive
The tool will download Windows 11 and make the USB bootable automatically. This process takes 15–30 minutes.
For those who already have the Windows 11 ISO file.
Download Rufus from rufus.ie
Open it and insert your USB
Select your ISO file
Choose:
GPT + UEFI for modern systems
MBR + BIOS for older systems
Click Start to create the bootable drive
Once the bootable USB is ready:
Insert it into your target PC
Reboot and enter the BIOS/boot menu (F12
, ESC
, or DEL
)
Select the USB as the boot source
Begin Windows 11 installation
USB Not Recognized: Try formatting it to FAT32
Secure Boot Issues: Disable it in BIOS
Corrupt ISO File: Always download from Microsoft’s site
